I had never heard of the wonderful little book Oh, the Places You’ll Go by Dr. Seuss, perhaps because I don’t have children. I heard about it recently in business meeting and when I returned home I got a copy of the book and have read it several times. It is applicable to everyone, regardless of what age kid you are.
In this short book Dr. Seuss captures the ebb and flow of life, the good times and the bad. His words typify the challenges, heartache and fear we all experience as well as periods of great success and exhilaration. For most people the times of heartache, challenge and fear seem to overshadow the periods of success.
Dr. Seuss talks about the “waiting place”. This perfectly describes the Law of Diminishing Intent which is The longer you wait to do something the less enthusiasm you will have for it. The Waiting Place is a place where many of us unintentionally spend a good part of our lives. This is probably because we don’t realize the pitfalls of waiting and the Law of Diminishing Intent. Waiting develops an inertia of its own, and Newton’s Law takes over; objects that are at rest stay at rest while objects in motion stay in motion. Even though waiting is a most uncomfortable spot we tend, over time to become comfortable with our discomfort.
“Simple it’s not, I’m afraid you will find,
For a mind-maker-upper to make up his mind.
You can get so confused that you’ll start in to race down long wiggling roads in
a break-necking pace and grind on for miles across weirdish wild space,
headed, I fear, towards a most useless place.
The Waiting Place . . .
. . . For people just waiting.
Waiting for a train to go,
or a bus to come or a plane to go
or the mail to come,
or the rain to go, or the snow to snow or
waiting around for a YES or a NO
or waiting for their hair to grow.
Everyone is just waiting.
Waiting for fish to bite or waiting for wind to fly a kite,
or waiting around for Friday night or waiting,
perhaps for their Uncle Jake, or a pot to boil,
or a Better Break or a string of pearls,
or a pair of pants or a wig with curls or Another Chance.
Everyone is just waiting. NO! That’s not for you!”
